I’ve been meaning to pick up an R.A. Salvatore book…is this a good one to start reading the author on? Or will I be confused missing out on the background of the world he writes in?

Actually, I’d say that the Cleric Quintet might be one of the better places to start. A lot of the Forgotten Realms literature is loaded with internal references to storylines and special characters, but the Cleric Quintet is pretty standalone. The whole thing is internally consistent, yet very separate from the rest of the world.

On the flip side, it won’t give you any insider information to help you understand other Forgotten Realms books, but it’s still a great read. For an introduction to Forgotten Realms, I’d probably recommend Elminster: The Making of a Mage and/or The Crystal Shard.
